James & James Whisky served only at Pen-y-bryn Lodge

Designing the Perfect Liquor Label for James & James Whisky

September 7, 2022

For an international client, I was recently commissioned to design the label for their new liquor release, James & James Whisky, to be served at the prestigious Pen-y-bryn Lodge in Oamaru, New Zealand. Situated on the South Island's east coast, Oamaru is best known as one of New Zealand’s most historic towns. During the 19th century, it became famous worldwide as a haven for artists due to its natural beauty and quaint charm.

The luxury boutique hotel in Oamaru, New Zealand

Private casks from the The New Zealand Whisky Company

In 2019, resort co-owners James Glucksman and James Boussy contacted The New Zealand Whisky Company to craft an exclusive, private cask of ultra-premium whisky. They recently received approximately 45 private-labeled bottles of one of the world’s most sought-after single malts to serve at their luxury boutique hotel.

Designwise, they were looking for something that would represent the exclusivity of their new product while incorporating handcrafted artwork. They wanted a classy, elegant design that felt professional but didn’t take itself too seriously.

The final label design

Our collaborative effort created the label demonstrated above.

Cheers!
